We had a Survivor, but it was cancelled after 3 seasons. Then it was brought back on 2013, had decent ratings, but we have not heard from it since. Meaning it returning is very unlikely.

Our players were usually very honest and the boots were mainly on who people disliked, not in a game/strategic sense.

Mateship and Romance on Australian Survivor

The Aussie remake of the hit reality series is expected to feature “mateship” and romance according to Executive Producer Stephen Tate.

Production is currently underway in Samoa for Network Ten’s adaptation of Survivor, and last week, the show’s Executive Producer Stephen Tate divulged some details of what to expect from the new series. Tate is also the Head of Entertainment and Factual Programming for Network Ten, and over the years has produced series such as Australian Idol, Big Brother, and MasterChef Austrailia.

Speaking to MCN.com, Tate revealed that the major difference between the Australian cast, compared to their international counterparts, is that they put much more value into “mateship.” While we are used to backstabbing and deception on American Survivor, Tate stated that some of the Aussie cast members “…are genuinely conflicted when it comes to voting out a mate.” Even though that might suggest a less compelling show to an American audience, Tate believes that it gives Australian Survivor “a lot of depth and heart.”

That’s not to say Australian Survivor is going to be all flowers and rainbows. “They are tough and funny and just as competitive as any international Survivor cast,” Tate said, with “…a few scoundrels thrown in for good measure.” Regarding what they have filmed so far, Tate said to expect: “Spectacular challenges with nail-biting finishes, camp sites washed away by king tides, alliances tested, brilliant blind sides at tribal council, and the discovery of secret immunity idols.” That sounds like all the ingredients of a great Survivor season. It even has what Tate described as “the Holy Grail” – a budding romance.

Over 15,000 people applied to be on the new series, with 24 making the official cast – which Tate said is a “diverse group aged from 22 to 62.” The season is filming in a remote area of Samoa, which Tate described as “breathtaking,” and will last for 55 days. Aussie actor Jonathan LaPaglia will host the show.

An official air-date has yet to be announced.

Thoughts below:

-It was actually a really great premiere! I enjoyed the American-ness of it all, but also the little touches that the US show doesn't do anymore, like the full title sequence and the longer clips of camp life rather than just jumping into strategy and idols and blindsides and big moves!!!. The editing's still slightly one-sided, but considering there are 24(,000) of them, it could have been a lot worse and I'm sure it'll balance out in future eps
-Jonathan (LaPaglia, not Firewire) was a tad rusty and was clearly trying hard to be a Probst clone, but he'll get into his stride soon enough I imagine
-Vavau are already the best tribe and I won't hear anything against them (shelter-breaking icons <3)
-Speaking of Vavau, I'm a little worried about Sue-Nami already getting the #GettingItDoneAt71 edit in the very first episode :worry:
-Saanapu were there too
-Aganoa suck apart from Kat and maybe Phoebe :/ But they look set to be the Matsing/To Tang/insert other dysfunctional tribe here so it's all good
-Kat beating Des <3 It was a pretty iconic one episode rivalry, peaking in Des' Crystal/Randy levels of shouting his vote <3 <3 <3

Episode 2's torrent's been up for a while if anyone's looking for it, and here are my thoughts on the matter:

-This is shaping up to be a great season, at least by non-US standards :love: I was hoping for Aganoa to lose, partly for the lulz and partly so Evan could go immediately, but at least Vavau and Sue-Nami were safe, plus Saanapu's tribal was messy and that's always appreciated

Okay so I'm all caught up

This is a really promising start! The production values are very high and on par with the US version which is a good thing. It's surreal watching Survivor without Jeff for me but I think Jonathan's doing a pretty good job and I like the fact he's keeping most of the iconic catchphrases :love: (although there's a few like 'over here guys' and 'I'll go count the votes' that he needs to hone in but now I'm just being trivial lol). His challenge commentary could and should improve with time too. Oh and I'm also glad they've taken the theme and run the full intro to the episodes :love:

As for what's happened so far:

The cast seems good overall so I'm excited to see what happens! I'm glad immunity idols are playing a part but is it right they can only be played before they vote? Surely that'll take all the fun of the blindside out of them?

Yeah I;m finding it kinda boring also. I feel like there are no strong characters and all of them are a bit vanilla. The episodes drag a lot as well, they need to be cut down to 40m, and not be 50 mins.

Way too many people as well that theres no one to really root for as no one has had sufficient airtime [Bar the people who are in danger of being voted out each episode... Therefore making it way too predictable which tribe loses and who is in danger]

Like who? It's nothing new for Survivor to prioritize a few personalities for storyline purposes, and the one's who've been quiet now will have their time, especially considering there are still 20-something episodes left. The two who were voted out were both big characters and tribe divisions have already been made apparent and more importantly, interesting. There are lots of different stories already beginning to form (Kristie's mental state and paranoia, Peter's physical state and potential quit, Sam being distrustful of women, Aganoa turning on Evan, Flick and Brooke's power alliance, Kate's OTT positivity, Nick taking on and possibly regretting his tribe leader role, Conner nearly killing himself, Kylie's kids, Phoebe & Rohan (shipping it tbh), I could go on), and that's just two episodes... yeah, I get that 24 contestants is a lot to watch and get to know, especially considering the lack of diversity which is one of my few bugbears with this season so far, but when you compare it something like Samoa where only two or three people got any real content all season, I don't understand the complaints?

Looking at the first two episodes I liked the first much more. It was a good facedown between the main two combatants, even though I would have liked Des to stay. Both had some focus through the episode though he had more. At the tribal we heard little from him in the edit, and that did signal to me that he was going. The men didn't seem to consider the probability of the women's alliance that much. Would have liked both to stay even, it seemed a good rivalry.

The second episode I didn't get that much. Bianca was getting built up as an interesting under cover contestant and then suddenly she's gone. Was she even the main one behind splitting Brooke and Flick or was it Kylie? I wasn't concentrating because it kind of came out of nowhere, maybe the editors could have prepared it more in episode one.

So two in a row who we've been told what their strategy is and then they've gone. Des was a bad player it seems (but funny!), yet it's nice to have someone who you can follow their stategy (at least if they have some charisma). This does happen in the US version, Russell and Tony to name just two. And in this case I can't say many members of this second ep elimination tribe look very interesting. This Conner guy was one of the underwhelming intros, in his case 'a passage to manhood' (the other weak sounding ones including a mother missing her children, and another who wants to play 'nice'). And there's another guy (seems a bit boring) who doesn't even want to be there.

JL: The contestants were there for 55 days and I was on the island for 68. It was unbelievably tough. I really was not prepared for it at all! Our schedule is even tougher than the American one. They’re 39 days, we’re 55 days. They’ve got about 13 episodes, and we’ve got 26 episodes.

It's not topping the ratings, but it's doing brilliantly among the key demographic (i.e. young people) and the network are happy with it

Other thoughts:
-this episode was hella long but I enjoyed it, mostly because we didn't get the reward challenge until about half an hour in which lol
-JLP's really settling in now, even if some of his not-quite-Probst catchphrases will never, ever be catchphrases, ever
-of all the US Survivors to significantly influence the making of this show, I expected the likes of Richard Hatch, Jonny Fairplay and Parvati, not So effing Kim
-Saanapu are probably the worst tribe of the three now, probably because a) I don't know how much longer I can take Peter's "I might quit guys :(" storyline and b) I don't want to keep checking how to spell their name each and every time
-Brooke and Tegan getting confessionals must mean the curse is broken!!!!!
-oh jesus christ can they stop personifying chickens on this show @ Tai @ Matt
-comp beasts Vavau Of All People <3
-I hope Sue-nami gets an OTTN episode next week or something because I'm getting worried :/ Still, quality over quantity and all that

Just finished too, when I saw it was 75 minutes I was like 'D: oh god really' but in actuality this was one of my favourite episodes of Survivor in a long while

I'm not liking the boot order all that much tbh but it's nothing drastic yet (I guess the astronomical amount of players makes up for it), and the edit thus far does seem to give the game away pretty easily. It's like someone has a breakout episode and then they're voted out. Would definitely rather Kat have left of the two

I wonder if El and Phoebe would have went with the guys or the girl... At TC they're obviously saying one thing to make the boys feel safe as Rohan as the Idol, but who knows.

I'm really sad Pete left as I was really rooting for him and Kylie on the other tribe, they're definitely my least favourite tribe, I'm praying Kylie can find the idol and just make it to a tribe switch.

I think the tribes will switch when theres 18 left, into two 9s [possibly even three 6s, either one will be interesting]

The blatant rigging to keep Kat and Rohan in :joker: But I'm thankful for it because it would have sucked to have lost one of them so soon, even if they did have near-perfect J'Tia/Alecia and Drew Christy storylines already (Rohan calling the idol "thingo" like the Aussie trash he is <3) (also is anybody else starting to get major Jonclyn vibes from him and Phoebe? Which is never a bad thing)

Yeah, Peter was ill but he also sucked and he was just the Neal to Kylie's Aubry, so no loss there (that quit was so awkwardly edited though. Because there's no better way to signpost that someone else is leaving than to stick a random scene in after the losing tribe go off to tribal)

They didn't really have any reason to do it, no, but with the enormous number of episodes still to come it's the kind of thing they can afford to do (as opposed to the US version, which often struggles to fit 17-or-so eliminations into 14 eps)

Omg just finished tonight's episode (tuesday) and dam that was a crazy ending and omg proberly the best episode of survivor I've seen in a while. I'm really enjoying this!
Crazy how they did the vote then instead of being voted out they swaped tries and then to top it off they brought someone with them!!!
