Why?

If we sent a genuinely wonderful song you liked you wouldn't vote for us based on what?

Current UK iTunes chart positions:

#3 - Norway :clap1:
#6 - Netherlands
#20 - Azerbaijan
#22 - Switzerland
#23 - Sweden
#29 - Italy
#37 - Australia
#38 - Estonia
#41 - Czech Republic
#42 - Denmark
#53 - Cyprus
#56 - Another version of Norway
#62 - Malta
#67 - Russia
#68 - Iceland
#73 - Netta with Nana Banana :joker:
#74 - Spain
#81 - Mans with Heroes
#91 - Belarus
#104 - Netta with Toy
#106 - Slovenia :umm2:
#128 - Greece
#147 - Eleni Foureira - Fuego
#172 - San Marino

and nothing for Serbia, France, Germany, North Macedonia, Albania or Israel.

Ignoring our own because it's at #17 and we're obviously gonna support our own... although this further backs up my point: Lucie Jones was the first to chart even in our own country since Blue back in 2011. If we can't even listen to our own song, why should Europe vote for it?

Is it time the jury votes were scrapped? They’re clearly very out of touch with what the public are interested in, they’re ruining people’s chances by low-balling fun, upbeat songs, are they needed?

In a year where the winner didn’t too either the public, or the jury vote, doesn’t it really have a benefit to the competition?

I've said it in here before but we need to take it more seriously. Having Mel Giedroyc run around for an hour interviewing musical dullards like Mollie King whilst making crude jokes and allowing Mans Zelmerlow to flex his ego a bit more is just doing nothing for our musical reputation.

We distance our pop from Europe because we see it as beneath us, we just stick to a few big cities whenever our artists go out on tours (Paris, Berlin, Barcelona, Rome, nowhere else).

We need a complete attitude overhaul but it won't happen because we're little Britain and we find it easier to just throw our dummy out of the pram and say "it must be Europe that's in the wrong". Nah. We just send crap that even we don't want to listen to.

I think Shaun made a great point tbf, we keep sending duds. The best we have sent in years was Lucie and she did fine in the jury vote.

Ed Sheeran maybe ? He would be popular.

Shaun
19-05-2019, 07:41 PM
I don't think we need to send someone of the calibre of Adele, Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith, etc because they're all already hugely successful. Same reason you don't get Sweden sending Zara Larsson and Robyn, or Norway sending Sigrid.

But I think if the BBC are going to continue to hold the threshold on who we send, then tying it in with the annual "BBC Sound of...." lists they come up with would be a great gateway for the pop musicians we are supposedly so keen to promote. The only problem here is that "Sound Of..." also promotes other countries' acts (Billie Eilish, Sigrid, ROSALIA, ALMA in the past 2 years).

If burgeoning popstars turn it down and refuse to perform for 200+ million potential listeners then that's their problem. I just wonder if we even offer the likes of recent British popstars like RAYE, Charli XCX, Jack Garratt, Rag n Bone Man, Dua Lipa, Stefflon Don etc. the chance? Or just take the easy route and assemble some nobodies that were in a musical once.

Vanessa
19-05-2019, 07:49 PM
Dua Lipa would be interesting, I think.

The jury was an absolute mess, two jurors ranked in reverse which meant poland should of qualified instead of belarus, austria should’ve finished last instead of ireland, also north macedonia actually won the jury vote and malta should’ve been three places higher, really annoyed since poland was my 2nd fave and malta and north macedonia were also faves of mine

The full jury results have been released and because stuff like this fascinates me, a look at our best placings:

- One Hungarian judge put as at #2, and one Portuguese judge did too.
- One Armenian person put us at #3
- One Croatian person put us at #4
- Two Israeli judges put us at #4 and #5 but two others said #19 and #20 so we ended up 11th and missed out by one place </3
- One Danish person put us at #5
- Two Swedes put us at #6 but two others put us at #22 (Lina Hedlund, of Alcazar fame) :joker: and #18, meaning we ended up 13th overall in their ranking

And then the Cypriot chairperson put us dead last :clap1: a man of taste.

The UK's last-placed Eurovision Song Contest entry has had its score lowered by five points, organisers say.

A revision of scores means Michael Rice's song Bigger Than Us picked up only 11 points from Saturday's final.

The contest said an incorrect calculation had been used to create a "substitute" set of points after the Belarusian jury was dismissed.
