Before now little has been revealed about the video for Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," but details about the clip finally are spilling out. It was directed by longtime Gaga collaborator Jonas Åkerlund, who also just wrapped up work on Britney Spears' "Hold It Against Me" video.

A source tells Hollywoodlife.com that the video is "[Gaga's] love letter to the homosexual community," adding that the pop singer tackles the repealed "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy she was so vocal about in 2010. Gaga reportedly spent this first week of February editing the video in a New York City hotel. "The team took over two suites in the Greenwich Hotel for editing, and the singer only works at night, from 10:30 p.m. to 7 a.m., because she spends all day rehearsing for the Grammys," the source says.

The clip reportedly took more than four days to shoot in New York, Gaga's hometown. "She approaches herself as Gaga in the gender-bending video and there are references to Jo Calderone, the male model [character] she portrayed in the September issue of Vogue Hommes Japan," the source adds.

She reportedly wears Thierry Mugler designs in the clip. Gaga, of course, has close ties to the designer — her stylist, Nicola Formichetti, is the creative director for the iconic brand, and the singer recently debuted a remixed track from her upcoming album, Born This Way, at a Mugler runway show in Paris.

Lady Gaga’s fans – or Little Monsters – have had a long wait to hear Born This Way, but some are doubting whether it was worth it, complaining on Twitter that it sounds like Madonna’s Express Yourself.

Well, Born This Way is a ‘storming pop tune’ according to a music blog on The Guardian, which adds that ‘it doesn't sound copycat, more a knowing nod and a cute wink’ to the Madonna anthem.

NME don’t think it’s a rip-off either, gushing that it’s ‘a bold, instantly iconic event song, but also the sound of Lady Gaga going back to basics’. Though their reviewer does acknowledge the Queen of Pop link. ‘It’s not without its nods to Madonna in her late-’80s Imperial phase,’ he says.

I used to really like Lady Gaga, its a shame but i've totally gone the other way at the moment. The song is terrible but she keeps coming up with stupid things like this egg thing and the meat dress. I'm sorry but only a die hard gaga fan can justify the meat dress as being good. Its just Lady gaga trying to shock and keep people interested. Im sick of Lady Gaga and want to know about the woman behind her more, she needs to become more human for me to like her as a person because she isn't coming across as a person at the moment IMO. I like this, but we don't get to ever see this in the general media, this shows she has a normal side to her. I like her outrageous style when it is interesting and not pure freakish and aiming to shock like the meat dress did. I respect that she want's to keep people focused on her music not her personal life but she has done it to such an extent that it comes across that she has left all of herself behind and formed a totally new person. It's just a shame for me to have started to go off of lady gaga when i really liked her and her ways to begin with.

Just watched the 60 Minutes interview and the Overtime footage. She is so sweet and down to earth, love that she doesn't lie neither, saying she smokes pot, I bet loads of stars do but would they ever admit it openly? No. I like that about Gaga. Lady GaGa has revealed that Madonna is a fan of her new single 'Born This Way'.

The singer, whose latest number has been criticised for its likeness to Madonna's 'Express Yourself', has since insisted that Madonna 'completely supports' the track.

Lady Gaga gave Rolling Stone an advance preview of four songs from her upcoming album Born This Way an hour before the first show of the final leg of her Monster Ball tour in Atlantic City. Though Gaga's people were quick to point out that these were not the final mixes, the tracks certainly sounded like polished, finished recordings. Here's a track-by-track rundown of what we heard backstage, as well as what she played from the new record in concert.

"Judas" - Currently scheduled as the second single from the album, "Judas" is a classic Lady Gaga pop banger with three huge hooks, a thumping house music breakdown and a vocal part that borrows a bit of Rihanna's distinctive cadence. Gaga has written about falling for the wrong guy before in "LoveGame" and "Bad Romance," but this time around she's a bit less dark and dramatic. There's a bubbly sweetness in her voice as she sings "I'm just a horny fool / baby it's so cool / I'm still in love with Judas, baby."

"Edge of Glory" - This one sounds crazy in print -- it's a massive power ballad with heavy club beats that features Clarence Clemons of the E Street Band wailing on his saxophone -- but somehow it all seems totally natural when you actually hear it. There's an element of cheesiness to it, but it's totally captivating and incredibly catchy. If any of these new Gaga tunes demands to be a big fat hit, this is it. The inclusion of Clemons is an inspired touch that amplifies the song's Eighties stadium rock vibe, but his actual performance is amazing and ranks among the best of his career.


"Scheiße" - A remixed version of this number was used in a recent runway show by fashion designer Thierry Mugler. The album version doesn't have the same hardcore European house flavor, but it's definitely the tune most likely to bring back memories of early-Nineties dance crossover hits by C&C Music Factory, Snap and RuPaul. The opening of the song -- in which she flatly intones "I don't speak German, but I can if you like" -- is fierce, but the song is saved from being a slight novelty by a soaring chorus that vaguely recalls Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger."


"Hair" - "Hair" is another inspirational song in the mold of "Born This Way," but it's a bit weirder, mixing the yearning romantic melodrama of Pat Benetar's "We Belong" with the hard industrial metal edge of Broken-era Nine Inch Nails. The lyrics are essentially about embracing one's hairstyle as the ultimate expression of their identity, climaxing with Gaga triumphantly declaring "I am my hair!" in its huge sing along chorus. An anthem for hair salons everywhere.


"You and I"- Gaga didn't share the studio version of this theatrical rock ballad, but she did perform it in her concert later in the evening. This one has been part of her Monster Ball setlist for months now, and at this point it's already a crowd-pleasing showstopper. Assuming that the album recording will have more or less the same piano-centric arrangement, "You and I" will provide a necessary break from the high energy beats on the other tracks. "Born This Way" - This is the Number One single in the country, so you've probably heard this one by now. This was the first time Gaga has played the song in concert, but it's already the ideal conclusion to her show, ending the night with a giddy communal celebration of personal empowerment and self-acceptance. Yeah, in the US she's been promoting her ass off but in the UK there has been nothing at all. Adele had her BRIT's performance and done radio interviews to promote the song. I'm shocked at people saying that 'Born This Way' isn't doing well in the UK, because it's going absolutely wonderfully. And also, 'Born This Way' is the biggest hit of the year so far.
