Anyway, Reviewers are LOVING the album
BBC:
Lady Gaga is the greatest thing that Planet Pop in 2011 could ever want. She’s a wise-beyond-her-years phenomenon who’s taken everything that has gone before and cast it into press-stopping new shapes – the fright wig on top, merely a bonus. She’s so far above her chart contemporaries that she’s created her own orbit, around her own world. You’re all welcome here, whoever you are. What you take from it is your own business.
It’s probably best to ignore the questionable cover imagery of her third album (or second, depending on your definition of what The Fame Monster was) and focus on the actual music. What’s delivered is a high-octane blend of nods to cheesy Euro-rave (hints of Sash!, Human Resource and Rozalla) and the rock of Springsteen, Judas Priest and Queen. Add a smidgeon of electroclash (Chicks on Speed, Peaches) and giant choruses comparable to ABBA and Ace of Base, and it’s clear the average – if the idea of ‘average’ exists in her world – Gaga tune is designed solely to hook into your brain.
Opener Marry the Night is as perfect as a straightforward fist-pumping entry into a colossus can be. Does the title-track really sound like Madonna’s Express Yourself? Not to these ears – and Gaga would never be so stupid as to allow blatant thievery to surface. The attempt to crowbar a song into what was built to be an anthem may put some off – anthems follow their own destinies to such a deified status – but it’s still an undeniably huge tune. If it speaks to a Middle America teen covering their bruises with foundation, then that’s a good thing. The following Government Hooker’s spooky opera entrance gives way to a Casiotone throb, Gaga throwing in references to JFK.
Americano delves into immigration over a futuristic musical theatre stomp, while Hair is an empowering freeway rocker about self expression. Scheiße is a monster tune begging for a sex dungeon-themed video event. The pace drops a bit for Yoü & I, a lighters-aloft moment which recalls Def Leppard. Not the most likely of stylistic inspirations, perhaps, but she makes the song work magnificently.
Gaga could have filled this album with guest slots from hip names and phoned-in cameos from rent-a-rapper types. But with the exception of Brian May axing all over Yoü & I, and the E Street Band’s Clarence Clemons honking over The Edge of Glory, there’s none of that. Born This Way is pretty much pure Gaga.
But this is not quite the revolution, and certainly not the greatest album ever made. It’s a storming collection of high-concept pop brilliance designed to soundtrack every preposterously tremendous Gaga moment for the next 18 months. If there’s a gripe to be had, it’s regarding the length: at an hour long, Born This Way initially feels more like an assault than an event, and it could easily lose a couple of tracks. However, if she is planning on releasing nine singles from it, then nobody can come away feeling ripped off.
Sometime in the future the frenetic, breathless giddiness will let up, and Gaga will – after a holiday, hopefully – breathe out and unleash her jazz odyssey. But until that happens, please enjoy someone actually putting a bit of effort and imagination back into pop, and keep the sneering and lazy comparisons in check. Not that they can take anything away from what is, simply, a marvellous record.
Oh No They Didn't:

‘Hype’ is a disgusting word. But when an album, which was a self-declared phenomenon before it was even an album, appears to be an experiment in hype itself, it becomes an unavoidable part of the conversation. There’s been a suspicion in the epic run-up to the release of Lady Gaga's second-and-a-half album that she’s just been being deliberately ridiculous just to piss people off. But then, having a go at a pop star for being ridiculous is in itself as ridiculous as having a go at a brain surgeon for being too hung up on all the neurosurgery.
There’s another possibility here though. In our man Peter Robinson’s (rather amazing) cover feature the other week, she expressed genuine surprise that people found ‘Born This Way’ the song something of an ‘Express Yourself’ parody. The suggestion actually moved her to tears. It’s in the nature of artists to miss the blindingly obvious about their own work.
But for the entire world to have the exact same instantaneous reaction, to the point where the words ‘Express Yourself’ began trending on Twitter, suggests that comparison holds water. You’d think somebody – somebody – in her team could have noticed. It’s just possible that Gaga is now such a powerful entity that everybody was just too scared of losing their jobs to point it out.
It would certainly bear out the chain of events that led to that appalling, badly-photoshopped mess of a cover image getting signed off. And if that’s the case then we really are in new territory for mainstream pop music, where somebody at the absolute peak of commercial heaviosity is able to operate with the artistic imperative of a David Bowie without an iota of outside interference. What you definitely cannot fault about this album is the scale of its artistic ambition.
One thing that much-debated 'Born This Way' album cover does get right is the record’s obsession with the fusion of flesh and metal. As if Gaga, having already (in her own head at least) fused herself with her fanbase to create a singular entity, she wants to weld physically to her synthesisers as if to create one all-powerful dreadnought of self-empowerment. For the most part this is one relentless torrent of heavy-metal-rave-pop. At the very least it’s a triumph in sound engineering.
‘Hair’ is an empowerment anthem using the simple image of the wind blowing through a person’s hair to illuminate the album’s Love-Yourself-And-Let-It-All-Hang-Out message way more effectively than the title track. It trumps it once again by being quite the gayest thing you will ever hear for a long time. On the same tip is ‘Bad Kids’, a homage to the NYC club kids era, hammering home the freak message to the Little Monsters, but with a chorus that is adorable instantly and forever.
‘Bloody Mary’ is a serene flipside to ‘Judas’ this time using Ms Magdalene to do much the same job, as dainty plucked strings careen around filthy beats to create something weirdly graceful. And ‘Americano’, a Hispanic upgrade of ‘Alejandro’ which riffs on both Evita and Santa Esmerelda’s ‘Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood’, succeeds because it is so colourfully deranged. Elsewhere the sci-fi goth night-stalk ‘Electric Chapel’ perhaps nails the record’s blood-and-chrome aesthetics most effectively of all.
Things get rather knottier when the beats drop heavier. ‘Scheisse’, which channels Miss Kittin doing a rave take on Madonna’s ‘Erotica’ strides into a commanding pop song and comes out a triumph. ‘Government Hooker’ drops down into freeform industrial techno impressively early on in the tracklist, but there’s scant evidence of any real political message in lines like “Put your hands on me, John F Kennedy”. And ‘Heavy Metal Lover’s staccato filth-fest is impressively murky but the relentless smut ends up sounding daft. The ostentatious ‘Highway Unicorn (Road To Love)’ aims for some kind of weird chamber-rave-metal-concerto yet comes out a total mess.
But then at the end, something spectacular happens. Skynet is given a rest and it emerges again that when Gaga does do pure emotion, she does it exceptionally well. ‘You And I’ is a quite epic exercise in futurist honky-tonk, apparently directed to a lesbian lover or a drag queen. And finally, the gleaming ‘The Edge Of Glory’ (apparently a love song to her late grandfather, yet with a romantic twist) finds her dancing “On the edge of something final we call life tonight” in the most ecstatic pop serenade this woman has ever come up with.
That beautiful simplicity reminds us that Lady Gaga can be guilty of trying too hard. But do you really think that’s wrong? ‘Born This Way’ doesn’t get everything right. It’s not the clarion to the dispossessed that it thinks it is. And after pushing so hard in this direction, she should probably strip it back to just her and a piano next time if she really wants to shock. Because rather than an exercise in hype, what ‘Born This Way’ really is an exercise in the pushing of everything to its ultimate degree. And for all the black, white and silver, it passes that test with flying colours.
- Just wanna say LMFAO @ them calling Luc a drag queen
Slant Magazine:
I had my claws out for this one, but I can't I am sorry... at Gaga for very long—not with songs like "Marry the Night," a more worthy successor to "Dance in the Dark" that channels post-disco Moroder, and the filthy-fabulous "Government Hooker," which manages to make the oft-robbed bassline from New Order's "Blue Monday" sound brand new. And not when the girl sells a lyric like "Dirty pony, I can't wait to hose you down" in a faux-continental accent without cracking up on "Heavy Metal Lover." (Typically flouted watersports-enthusiast community: You now have your very own anthem!) Gaga's self-proclaimed status as a student of all things pop culture results in some obvious but largely exhilarating experiments in pastiche: "Electric Chapel" is like a song by the Cardigans as fronted by Debbie Harry, featuring Slash, and produced by John Carpenter, while "Unicorn Highway (Road 2 Love)" might be what it would have sounded like if the Lizard King's heart had held out a few more years and he recorded a disco song.
References to other erstwhile '70s icons like ABBA ("Americano," "Judas") and Queen ("Yoü and I") are less imaginative, and Gaga gets in trouble when she allows her affinity for her fans to inform her songwriting, as she does on "Hair" and "Bad Kids" (for the record, it sounds like she's singing "******" instead of "bad kid," which, come to think of it, would have made for a much ballsier, albeit dicey, political statement), but it's easy to forget that she was still only 24 when she composed most of these songs. She's indeed on the edge of glory—that is, she isn't quite there yet, but it's fun, if infuriating at times, to watch her try so devotedly.
Norman Mailer once said that, when writing fiction, one should draw from their own personal narrative at oblique angles rather than cutting straight through and using it wholesale; this way, a writer can use their personal experience over and over in different ways without ever exhausting it. To that point, Gaga has tapped the well of the Queen of Pop so often and so directly that it will become impossible for her to continue to do so without facing fierce criticism. Which is unfortunate since she's most interesting, even most relevant, when striking that particular pose, as she does on "Scheiße," a Dietrich-by-way-of-Madonna-on-steriods techno-feminist manifesto.
When Gaga graduated to stadiums, her music clearly followed suit. There's nothing small about this album, and Gaga sings the **** out of every single track. In many ways, Born This Way is akin to the Killers' sophomore effort, Sam's Town: bloated, self-important, proudly American, an exercise in extraordinary excess. There are lots of mentions of Jesus Christ throughout the Born This Way project, not to mention Judas, Mary M., and machine guns that shoot church bells. Which makes sense, since Born This Way will likely be playing on a loop in hell. And all the bad kids—and ******s—will be dancing to it for eternity.
The Guardian:
Marry the Night's softer stylings are soon sent packing by what Gaga had always promised would be "sledgehammering dance beats". It's a pattern that holds throughout Born This Way. No matter how a song begins – pizzicato strings, operatic vocals, 80s rawk guitar – it's soon engulfed in buzzsaw synths and robo-precise rhythms. This is shameless, club-orientated pop that aims for instant impact.
Gaga has made much of the various themes on offer – religion (Judas, Bloody Mary), freedom (Road to Love), identity (Hair, Born This Way) – and these messages are hammered home rather than hinted at. Nobody expected Born This Way, hyped by Elton John as a "new gay anthem", to reference post-queer theory texts, but it's safe to say that subtlety isn't one of its strong points. Elsewhere, Hair uses follicles as a metaphor for freedom – not exactly a brave new concept for anyone who's seen the 60s musical Hair (or caught the sermon from Danny in Withnail & I for that matter).
Trite lyrics abound ("I just want to be free, I just want to be me") but these weaknesses can also be strengths, and there's something admirable about the way the aforementioned trio of tracks address confused teenagers in search of their identity. Bad Kids, in particular, is a Vince Clarke-esque stormer listing a series of flaws ("I'm a jerk", "I'm a bitch", "I'm a selfish punk") that places Gaga, like Pink, as a mainstream pop star addressing outsider America. That said, when the music drops out midway, Gaga could have come back with a slightly more hard-hitting line than "I'm a twit".

This woman is soo talented she doesnt need all the gimmicks and bizzare over the top costumes , political statement dress senses .some of them arent that bad but alot are soooo bizzare
and she's actually pretty too . her songs are soo catchy and good and even the dancing is amazing in most of the songs /video's , her recent songs just keep getting more catchy and wicked
but some of her music video's are too messed up yet the songs are always fantastic , judas video makes sense even tho theres alot happening in it and at first i was like what the hell but it makes sense now its a song about betrayal etc and nice song
whereas born this way and alejandro the songs are good yet the videos are too messed up but thats lady gaga i think she loves being controversial like what madonna use to do

Eugh, I hate Play.com. I ordered the album from there, they said it had been sent out on Thursday and I still haven't got it. Would have been easier to just buy it from the shop.
Nice to see she will have the biggest first week sales of the year over here though! 100,000 copies in just one day is very impressive.

are you effing serious?
you brag about how many copies youre buying and then brag about her sales figures? Are you so dumb you can't see the glaring contradiction?
because her sales figures are so honest, right? selling for 0.99c on Amazon knowing her fans(read sheep) would buy 30 copies. releasing two versions...knowing her fans(read sheep) would buy both versions...many times.
dishonest manipulative sales figures that make a mockery of the charts. Bogus bollocks.

The 0.99 cent sales won't count towards the chart and overall sales figure because it's under $4, so all of the people who bought the 0.99c digital version will have not contributed at all to her sales.

predictable boring response from an unpredictable boring person who can't decide whether he likes Gaga, Adele, jedward, Bieber et al from one day to the next.
but anyways, back to the topic..

Not true :nono:
Amazon is paying record label Interscope the $4 minimum which means that they DO therefore qualify for soundscan chart sales. Its only Interscope that can't sell to the public for less than $4. Amazon are taking the loss to attract new buyers to their site and try and put a dent in Apples huge dominance.
Even after the 0.99c offer it was sold by Amazon for a much lower than normal $6.99. Plus it was released a day early in America to gain an extra days sale. Then all the Gaga fans multi buying like crazy(like Bieber fans). All just to gain huge first week sales and hence huge hype. But it's cheating and cheapens the charts credibility.
Apparently in Germany they have a chart based on money made rather than numbers sold. So if you sell half price you basically have to sell twice as much as a full price to be equal in the charts etc This sounds more fair to me and make it a more level playing field.

Oh well I never knew that, bit sneaky of them. I expect she's gained loads of sales through that deal then, thousands must have bought it for 0.99c whilst it was available.
She's still expected to sell more than 900,000 copies of the album though, which in this day and age is very impressive.

Lady GaGa is to star on a special edition of Paul O'Grady Live, it has been announced.
The 'Bad Romance' popstar will fly in to the UK for the ITV1 chatshow, where she will perform four songs live, including recent hits 'Born This Way' and 'Judas'.
The Friday night talkshow, which is currently off-air for a few weeks, returned for a second series earlier this year and has fared well in the ratings.
Celebrity guests on the current run have included John Cleese, Amanda Holden and Brenda Blethyn.
GaGa recently put on a mini-concert for US TV show Good Morning America, as well as appearing on the season finale of American Idol alongside performers such as Beyoncé and U2 duo Bono and The Edge.
The Lady GaGa special of Paul O'Grady Live is expected to air on June 17 on ITV1.
