Im in the process of giving up..and I'm not using patches or anything like that. Just cutting down on how many I smoke gradually until Im on like 1 or 2 a day and then just cut it out. Am down to 5 a day from 20

I think thats probably the easiest way...

Just quit cold turkey or cut down gradually. I can't stand how people waste so much money on patches and gum and stuff to help them. You're throwing money at these companies so they can keep you hooked on nicotine - the drug you're meant to be quitting in the first place - only to probably end up back on proper smokes eventually anyway.

Just keep in shape and your mind will start to feel good about the body and won't want to smoke. And I mean really keep in shape. Run like hell or something. No expensive therapy of nicotine substitutes or any of this garbage.

Because they work for a lot of people Stu. My dad quit by using the inhaler after being a chain smoker for 30 odd years.

I'm basing this on personal experience. I've never known anyone to stay off the tabs who have used that stuff.

I think cutting down gradually helps the best, I went from 15 a day, down to 5, then to 1 over a period of a couple of months and actually quit altogether for 6 months.
Unfortunately I did start again (stress@ work & terrible willpower) but am still only on 5 a day at the moment.

My friend also quit by cutting down gradually and was down to 1 a day for about six months before he actually quit and he hasn't smoked for 5 years

The one your suggesting is ideal but it takes alot of willpower to do it as my Mom and Dad gave it ago and they couldn't get off it.

Yeah you're right it is hard and I'm still not completely off them, but Stu is right I think if you have something to distract you i.e in the form of excercise etc it helps. Like for instance I played a game of badminton this morning and then did a dance class and didn't have a smoke until like an hour ago..

Yeah it's all in the mind, obviously it sounds easy to me as I am not smoking, but stuff like dance class or meeting up with friends and family can take your mind off smoking.

There's no "best" way to give up smoking ..... you may have to try several times, with different approaches .....

I was a "chain-smoker" who didn't really want to give up, but my doctor's advice was stark - give up or die, much sooner rather than later, from a heart attack .....

So, I spent a year attending courses and putting the dread day off .....

Then, 8 years ago, I bit the bullet, slapped on the patches and went for broke .....

It was 12 weeks of hell ..... insomnia, hallucinations, cold sweats, vomiting, diarrhoea, mood-swings, etc, etc, etc .....

..... but I haven't smoked since .....

What really works is will-power and, for me, that meant formulating a mantra in my mind and repeating it, as necessary, before, during and after the physical cessation of smoking .....

Nicotine replacement therapies can help with the physical addiction, but having tricks up your sleeve to distract you from the psychological habit can be just as important.
