North Carolina
voters approved a constitutional amendment yesterday defining marriage
solely as a union between a man and a woman, becoming the latest US
state to effectively slam the door shut on same-sex marriages.

With most of the precincts reporting yesterday, unofficial returns showed the amendment passing with about 61 per cent of the vote to 39 per cent against. North Carolina is the 30th state to adopt such a ban on gay marriage.

Sounds like the amendment passed despite the majority of the voters being in favour.

It was already banned but now it's in the constitution. So could be another 20 years before it's looked at again.

Eh the amendment was essentially to ban same-sex marriage, that's what 61% of people were in favour of

I wouldn't say North Carolina is representative of all of America tbf, same sex marriages are legal there in some parts of the country which is more than can be said for here

Civil partnership is better than nothing. Apart from the name, it's essentially all of the same rights of a marriage.

What a joke and what a shame that there will always be still some bigoted views around. I am straight and believe that gay people have as much right to get married as straight people because it is about declaring love.

Marriages nowadays mean nothing in terms of vows because of the amount of people divorcing quickly or the rush decisions couples make but it is their life, although fair play to couples that have been married for lots and lots of years through the highs and lows.

Why doesnt Obama or whoever just make it legal in the whole country :/ who cares if some people don't like it.. not everyone liked having a black president, but they got over it, and would get over same sex marriage as well

Marriage (to me anyway) is more of a religious thing. I dont actually understand why any gay couple would want a part in something that demonises them for their sexual preferance anyway.

Can straight people get civil partnerships? I would actually rather have that than marriage
