If any fails to do so,

to prevent the site or app from

Ofcom's group director of online safety,
making life safer online 'is one of
the defining challenges of our era'.
'Society has long protected youngsters from
products that aren't suitable for them,
from alcohol to smoking or gambling,' he said.

'But for too long children have been
only a click away from harmful pornography online.

'Now, change is happening.
These age checks will bring pornography
into line with how we treat adult services
in the real world, without compromising access
and privacy for over-18s.'

In terms of how the age checks would work,
Ofcom has already listed seven methods
that porn providers could use.
Ultimately, which one they opt for is their
decision, not Ofcom's, but their chosen
method must be ‘highly effective’
at correctly determining if a user is under 18.

Ofcom's seven suggested strategies
are photo-ID matching, facial age estimation,
mobile-network operator (MNO) age checks,
credit card checks, email-based age estimation,
digital identity services and open banking.

Open banking works by accessing the
information a bank has on record regarding
a user's age, while photo-ID matching involves
uploading a verified photo-ID document,
like a PDF of a passport or driving licence.]

The crazy thing is all the under age people who they are ‘protecting /preventing’ will be technically savvy enough to find away around the new system and the only ones who can legally watch porn either won’t want to jump through hoops to prove their age or won’t know to use a VPN ( if they even know what one is in the first place ! )

I think the idea is to make it as awkward/difficult as possible that minors won't bother going to the hassle and therefore it'll cut down the amount of underage people consuming porn, which is only a good thing.

I believe there are three ways to verify age: through producing a photo ID, running a credit card check or doing a 'face scan' which estimates someone's age. The first and the last will be highly effective in blocking youngsters from accessing porn, and I believe the majority of teenagers won't want to input their parents credit card details for fear of them being charged or notified, so I do think this will be effective.

I'm all for it - porn is extremely damaging - it creates super unrealistic expectations around what real sex is like, and particularly for guys, it can feed into really ugly attitudes towards how to treat women particularly in the bedroom.

I guess I have a little concern it feels bit...authoritarian/big brother-y, however I think it's worth it from a safety perspective and the benefits of reducing porn consumption from a young age overrides the worry of it being a bit of a power overreach.

There is also the very legitimate issue of it pushing people to access sites who are flouting the rules that are riddled with virus' etc... and potentially hosting worse material than on sites such as PornHub - I think they need to really police these sites if they want this new bill to be safe and effective, but I'm not sure how possible that is?

Agreed the normalisation of porn has been very damaging imo so the more hoops that people have to jump through to access it the better

Personally it won't effect me because I don't look at those sites, but there is also a major privacy risk around those adults who do provide their details - providing a photo ID that is then leaked and connected to sites to do with porn is a very risky threat. I think the intention is good, but it's quite a flawed idea the more I think about it...

I does feel wild that porn is so easily accessible to minors, especially when you compare it to age verification around alcohol for example - even if you buy a bottle of something online the delivery driver has to see a form of ID before handing it over.

VPN I think you mean. I don’t know what they can do to keep kids safe on the net, maybe a ban on internet for under 15s? But how would that work

They have this in Texas. I'm not really sure what age verification means in the context of our laws because I don't care that much about porn, but some sites got melty about it over "Free speech" and turned off the ability for people here to access it. I'm not sure what they thought they were accomplishing...

There's nothing to really be as careful about because it's not like there's a Dark Web version of Google (it's all self-report/specific crawl jobs). And even if there were, it'd still probably manage to be far less evil than the legitimate Google. Jokes aside... They'd have to find a link somewhere on the "good internet" in most cases to get to anything problematic. I'd be more weary of hanging around random Discords... there's a reason admin err on the side of caution and will nuke entire servers (including permanuking accounts using them) rather than try to figure out who "the good ones" actually are.

You can use an anonymous browser though if you need to self-report your recent stint in Antifa to the police and to the CIA. I personally advocate this use case. Please use this function judiciously to report your terrorismings
