AT 2am in a tacky Southend nightclub Jordan’s evening was fast becoming an unmitigated disaster. Booed off stage after the CD of her new single skipped three times, she necked vodka shots and whined about the wreckage of her short-lived pop career. As the cacophony of jeers and catcalls reached fever pitch, she stumbled over to husband Alex Reid to vent her frustration, in a rant that sounded like fingernails being dragged down a blackboard.

“We’ve done the wedding for TV, that’s it! It’s all over now!” she was overheard shrieking, as she jabbed a cerise pink acrylic fingernail at Alex’s face

All around the packed VIP area, clubbers stared at Katie Price as she screeched at 35-year-old Alex, who was stone cold sober in preparation for his next cage-fight. Few who overheard that vicious outburst in July could have doubted that, at that moment, Alex must have realised things were over. But six months on, Katie is still playing a ludicrous will-she/won’t-she? game about whether she is about to officially declare her marriage over. On Thursday her lawyers sent out a message warning news photographers to stay away from her £2million mansion in Woldingham, Surrey.

Soon after her split from Andre, Katie’s friends – with her permission – sold the “first” shot of her in a clinch with Alex in a pool in Marbella. But within weeks cracks in the romance were showing. And by that ill-fated night at Mayhem last summer, the situation was critical. Alex had to bundle his drunken wife into the back of a car and look after her as she vomited repeatedly on the long drive back home to Surrey.

Perhaps that grubby episode in July best sums up their marriage – Katie, the bolshy control-freak who loses her temper with spectacular consequences when things don’t go her way and Alex, bemused, out of his depth and unable to harness his express-train of a wife. No wonder those who witnessed such nasty spats gave their relationship little hope – despite the couple’s displays of love for the cameras.
