tbf to the man, it must have been a big step leaving his job and family etc, and does give him
some sort of weird credibility. It doesn't really say what the situation is with his kids though, I'd hope he still has some form of contact with them.
He is also taking the risk that this girl might just decide to leave him. She has nothing to lose at this point really, whereas he has already sacrificed a lot to be with her.. actually it doesn't put the relationship on stable ground at all really, having to carry that around their necks.
