I don't believe people can change themselves that much. There are influences you can remove that will alter behaviour, like drugs or alcohol for example, but that aggressive streak towards a woman will remain there. I don't doubt he's done something similar before, and I seriously doubt he'll never do the same thing again.
I agree that he seemed like a decent guy, but we didn't get to see his whole make up. I'm not saying he should receive s**t for the rest of his life because of it, but it was wholly unacceptable behaviour that can't be skipped over.
