I like a vast number of people are sick and tired of hearing about crimes of violence like this on elderly and infirm people, particularly muggings and burglaries, where an elderly person is burgled and terrorised in their own home.

These crimes have a devastating impact on old people who mostly never recover from such a traumatic event. The same is true of a mugging regardless of the extent of violence used, the sheer act of violation especially of an older more vulnerable person can leave the victim with extreme psychological scars that many never recover from.

To attack and rob an elderly person who by all accounts lived in the same area and displayed no obvious signs of wealth is one of the most sickeningly cowardly acts imaginable.

I also question whether trying to defend the crime by rolling out a long list of sad hard luck factors like troubled childhood or drug problem etc should be allowed to alter the fact that this person has committed this crime.

I would even go as far as arguing that these so called mitigating factors used by defence teams to elicit lighter sentences and reduced fines should in fact be viewed as Aggravating factors and the perpetrator if disclosing stories like these should in fact receive a longer sentence.

Reason being , coming from a disadvantaged background and having first hand knowledge of hardship and violence should in fact be MORE reasons not to repeat that kind of behaviour.

Either way it should not be used to mitigate crimes like these, used to overshadow the crime itself and overshadow the rights of the victims.

I think the Justice system has lost it's way a little since everyone has a choice whether they commit crime or not.

If you do then you should accept the full consequences/punishment that the law demands irrespective of any hard luck/sob story.

People need to take responsibility for their actions and not just expect a watered down, wishy washy, bleedin heart Liberal Justice system to let them off the hook with a slap on the wrists and a small fine or for more serious crimes a month's stay in 5 star prison and then the hardship of having to wear an electronic tag.

World's gone bleedin Mad..............!!!!
