you need a healthy balance. I remember trainee teachers coming in to my school, young and friendly and God to think of the hard time we gave them, I almost feel bad. They just had no authority and when they did lay down the law it was a complete joke to us because they just seemed crazy.

Personally I learn better from someone who is 'strict'. I mean there's a half way point, where they're understanding of mistakes of what not but ultimately need to get their work done and don't let you get in the way.
