I know of a girl called Aithne, I'm assuming they're the same names, just a different spelling.

There are some weird ass Irish names out there. I wouldn't know how to pronounce most of them, but I'd be decent enough to ask, and not just assume.. you know..

I've been friends with an Irish girl online for about 6 years and her name is Niamh. I asked her straight off how to pronounce it and sometimes now when I chat to her I go.. 'Nyeeeeev'. Some of the group who knew her were american and they initially thought it was pronounced 'Nam'.

Niall is a pretty easy one, and I'm surprised people have trouble with that to be honest.

Some of the comments on that article have ones I've never heard of though, and would have no idea how to pronounce.

We have a few Scots Gaelic names here which are spelled completely different from how they're said..

Niall Horan will have been a God send for all the Nialls abroad though I reckon I think the problem with Niall is, even though it's spelled like it sounds people aren't familiar with it so aren't quite sure what to do with it. My daughters best friend is called Etain, which is pronounced like it's spelled but I reckon most people would be afraid to pronounce it just because it looks unusual

I actually do think that Niall Horan has made a bit of a difference. Mispronunciations of my name haven't happened as much in recent years really.

Either way, when I have kids I'm going to make sure that they have a name that's unique yet easy to say. I'm not condemning them to the same crap as me.
