I think modern humans have been on the planet for around 100,000-250,000 years, although maybe the bible was right and we've only been here a few thousand.

Whatever it is, it comes nowhere close to billions.

What has this planet had to endure in all that time? All sorts. Floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, volcano's, magnetic storms, bombardment by commits and asteroids. And us humans think we're gonna destroy it with a plastic bottle or a straw.

For most of the earths history, the atmosphere would have been uninhabitable to our species. It's not quite as simple as you make it sound, but you can read about it if you want to look it up.
