Seems like they're trying to send a message about the crazy sentences that will follow before it's all over.
Could have been the perfect opportunity to utilise community service. Send him to work with a minority charity for a couple of weeks, but no one benefits from him being in prison.

I fully agree.
It can be assumed he had previous but in the absence of that as a fact, we can't apply that with certainty, this sentence is in my view, a 'making an example of'exercise.
As you say community service would have been far more appropriate.
