I think this is more about making an example of someone.
The law does come up with some odd sentences at times.

Then again we don't know if there were other things that influenced this sentence.

He must have had poor legal representation, he didn't actually urinate on the memorial.

I'd guess myself, with the location of it being where it is, it will have had a fair bit of attention of Dogs out with their owners.

I thought a heavy fine would come not a custodial.

urinating in the street is an offence ... exposing ones private parts in public is an offence so if the guy had some previous history, a short custodial sentence wouldn't be unreasonable

We, who work in law sometimes cannot get muggers locked up, or even serious shoplifters.

It is an offence and of course we don't know if he had previous history.
I can only assume he has however, and that you're on the right track in that for him to get a custodial.

If anyone thinks, especially at present, with Stores being closed, virtually few or even no public toilets, well,public toilets aren't open anyway during this lockdown, however if anyone thinks people aren't left right and centre, relieving themselves in public places..
They'd be sadly mistaken.

In fact Mr Cummings on his sight testing drive had to stop for his son's toilet break in the open, well bushes.

the guy apparently had drunk something like 16 pints the night before and was still drunk, so, add drunk and disorderly into the mix too ....

I remember my brother in his youth got caught having a pee down a side street and he got a night in a cell and a fine for a first offence

Seems like a ridiculous sentence to me. No one should be sent to prison for having a pee, even in the streets, and even if he'd pee'd directly onto the memorial.

Seems like they're trying to send a message about the crazy sentences that will follow before it's all over.

Could have been the perfect opportunity to utilise community service. Send him to work with a minority charity for a couple of weeks, but no one benefits from him being in prison.

I fully agree.

It can be assumed he had previous but in the absence of that as a fact, we can't apply that with certainty, this sentence is in my view, a 'making an example of'exercise.

As you say community service would have been far more appropriate.
