Plus this last year particularly where being put in danger from government incompetence on PPE too. A 1% increase is in fact a cut in real terms. A band 5 nurse with 20 years experience doesn’t earn £34k. Nursing has some very decent salary prospects but you have to move through the bands quickly to reach them... my wife is about 2 years in and is band 6 eyeing a 7 but (not to wife-flex lol) that is extremely uncommon... most NQN’s are going to be band 5 for 5+ years and frankly the band 5 salary doesn’t reflect the hours of study & training that go in at all. Nurses in countries like the US, Australia, NZ, Scandinavian countries etc. earn so much more when newly qualified. |

However, even IF nurses did regularly earn £34k, they would still deserve a decent year on year rise, not just because of the pandemic. Every employee (in any job role or industry) effectively takes a pay cut year on year if they don't at least get a cost of living rise.

Put that alongside the soaring cost of living thanks to insane property & rent increases . A little 2 bed flat came up near me yesterday - £700 a month. Which might not be a lot compared to "city prices" but identical flats were renting for £400/month 5 years ago.

…’protect the NHS’ is one of the three word slogans that isn’t going to work really …if the NHS nursing staff flee to the better paid private sector for doing the same role….it’s just going to contradict the protection of NHS…surely this has been a strong message to the government that the NHS is for life, not just for COVID…..

if people want better paid nhs, then either we need to cut down on the number of staff or increase what we the tax payer contribute toward it. Given the state the economy is in at the moment, i don't see tax rises happening right now for that (although im sure they will be along soon)

Third of nurses plan to quit NHS in ‘emerging crisis’…
A third of nurses are considering leaving the NHS in the next year, according to research highlighted by the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee (PAC). The committee’s report quotes a survey from the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) suggesting that 36% of respondents were considering leaving in the next year, with two-thirds attributing this to low pay and almost half claiming it was due to their treatment during the pandemic. Honestly, this thread really demonstrates how people will allow the NHS to perish. A nurse does something that reflects poorly on the tories and then 'Well, I had a nurse who was terrible to me once, they work back to back long ass shifts and are probably more stressed out than ever before in their lives but they didn't put on a song and dance when I wanted them to so they're ****!'
