I was a bit worried in the first episode - it didn’t feel like Dexter and I couldn’t figure out what was wrong. Then at the end he stopped being “Jim” and became “Dexter Morgan” and his inner monologue returned and I realised that’s what had been missing throughout the episode, and that it was actually really effective. Episode 2 with his thoughts back on display felt much more like Dexter.
