We should not be supplying any weapons, it only puts a target on British ships and planes suspected of carrying them to the Ukraine.

Those weapons are defensive, if not that would be seen as an escalation involving the west. We still can't risk being seen to be doing that.

Why on Earth would a clearly unhinged guy like Putin accept us sending any weapons especially anti-tank / anti-aircraft ones ..

I think the damage has been done tbh

Because he isn't actually unhinged. I mean yeah, in the sense that he's a power-hungry politician but I keep saying it over and over... The idea that he's "mad" is a western media fantasy. He's no more "mad" than Boris or any other world leader.

i don't think putin is particularly rational. Before the war started, he did those tv addresses where he actually was demented, there was no doubt about it. That was not the oratory of a rational sane man. Also, don't let the public speak the truth, if they do lock them up. Is that the action of a sane man? I don't think so. It may be he has always been this way and he managed to hide it well for a while, or maybe people just didnt want to face the stark reality. Either way, i wouldn't call putin a sane man. No sane man would behave as he is currently, threatening everyone in his path

Yeah I wouldn't use the term 'mad' but his actions are pretty delusional imo and he seems incredibly paranoid

I wonder how many people will have mask exemptions when the chemical weapons start being used.

He might be irrational in some of his actions, I've always said he's clearly power-hungry, he may be frustrated, his demeanor may show that. It may serve his purposes to SEEM unpredictable, is another take. Locking people away and making grandiose threats is pretty much standard stuff for authoritarian governments? He seeks to maintain the illusion of having more power than he does (it's increasingly seeming that Russia's only REAL military power is nuclear).

He isn't "not sane" and to believe that he is, you would have to have never encountered someone who is actually insane. They're not starting wars and locking people up... they're wandering around Tesco telling you that Jesus says they need more pesto. I'm not saying that from a place of ignorance about mental health but actually a place of knowledge; people who have lost their sanity are disregulated and quite obvious. Calling dictators and brutal warmongers "insane" is just an easy explanation IMO. "Oh they're just MAD!". They're not mad, they know what they're doing, they have clear goals and intentions. That's scarier than it just being someone who has lost the plot.

Well surely sanity is a spectrum and those who are wandering around Tesco talking to Jesus are at the far end of that but someone can be 'unhinged' or mentally unstable without being full blown 'mad'. There's been lots of rulers throughout history who've been considered mad and they probably did all have mental problems to varying extents, some really were full blown insane but most suffered more just from major delusions, deep paranoia, uncontrollable tempers, fits or envy, things like that. And a lot of those psychological issues would be caused by or at least exacerbated by their positions of authority and the power they hold

I never considered Putin particularly irrational or unstable before this. I didn't even think he was that dangerous as a leader, just different to Western PMs and Presidents. His actions and his words in the last six weeks have changed that though

There's a line between these things and "insanity" though, in my opinion. I think in this case the important distiction is, Putin isn't invading Ukraine/staring wars "because he's randomly lost his mind" - he may be gradually losing his composure/becoming reckless/acting impulsively the more things don't go as he had expected. Things like paranoia again I think are just part and parcel of authoritarian autocracies. Delusions are just flat-out normal psychology - if you really look, everyone has them, some are just less consequential than others.

i think the pandemic has a lot to answer for. He was paranoid about catching covid, he completely isolated himself away from everyone and did everything from his office and video chat. He hasn't had people to quell his paranoia and i think he has spiralled out of control and we are seeing the results now

Ukraine offers Neutral Status in exchange
for security guarantees
meaning it would not join military alliances

After the meeting with Russia.

it just needs 1 tactical nuke to destroy the city. I wouldn't trust a word coming from russia at the moment. Lets not forget that the week before the war started, putin laughed at suggestions that russia was going to invade ukraine

another example was when putin said that they were withdrawing their forces from the border, they were just on an exercise. I don't know how anyone can take a russian statement seriously. Russia doesnt need troops to level ukraine, people need to remember that
