I've been reading around, and apparently if a film is completely "shelved" the studio can write it off on their taxes, so essentially they waste no money at all

BUT if they do that the movie can't have any kind of release
ever. Though in this day and age, it will probably leak in some form, even if not as the finished movie.
But how bad must it be if the studio doesn't even think they'll break even, and that it's more financially viable to just get their money back
Plus there's the part about a shyte film "damaging their brand".
