I imagine he wanted to keep working for as long as possible. If you look at his back catalogue, of course there are some great movies but he's always done a tonne of absolute garbage as well, multiple movies every year going way back into the 90's. Fair. Maybe he just loves acting!
Thinking about it, the paycheck from some of the ... crapper productions would have been like nothing to him.
Good on him for putting his name to the productions of "up and coming" filmmakers!
