It should be allowed so long as it's not violent but once it's turned violent you can't have a successful peaceful protest alongside the civil unrest. You have to accept that it's turned violent and wait for order to be restored before you continue peaceful action, otherwise it's quite plainly not peaceful action.

On top of that, a good proportion of the supposed peaceful action wasn't peaceful in the first place. Intimidation and aggressive tactics are not peaceful protest just because they don't involve actually getting physical. I haven't seen much in the way of genuinely peaceful protest at any point over the past few days.
