I don't disagree in principal, but the public want to at least FEEL like they are being looked after by their government, during covid Furlough gave us that feeling as did the money the Tories spent on topping up peoples electricity bills, its all about optics, the current optics are terrible, the UK is one of the only countries in Europe to put illegals up in hotels, while people are struggling to keep everything together even while working all the hours God sends, there is a suspicion as well that they are feathering hotel owners pockets with tax payer cash, meanwhile we hear with Pat McFadden movingt to the DWP welfare will be targetted again. I dont think people would care that much about men coming on boats if they weren't hanging around town centres, they are just far too visible and an easy target
