I think it affects the first 4 shows or so and the final, but when you look at the way they've performed in the finals:

On first were...

Series 3: Ray - didn't win
Series 4: Same Difference - didn't win
Series 5: Eoghan - didn't win
Series 6: Stacey - didn't win

The 1st slot is the worst slot to have in the final, sometimes its obviously the right choice to go (especially in Series 3-5) but this years was a stupid choice, Stacey should have been on 2nd at least
