If thats the case then they might as well axe the news and just show it when something significant happens which would generally be politics. Kids get kidnapped all the time, people are always getting murdered, the weather regularly goes from one extreme to another etc yet they're almost always leading stories on the news.

Because they're not British and weren't killed by putting themselves out there in an attempt to do good. That doesn't have the same effect as it does when its British people, and if it has a high impact then more will watch. ITV and Sky are ratings chasers so they need stories with public interest.
