Cheaper and easier to bundle the car into a car get to the airport buy standby tickets and fly then discover the death either on landing or shortly thereafter in Germany. Which is probably where the deceased wanted to be laid to rest.
Probably would have been less chance of discovery if they had drove via the Chunnel or ferry.

When put like that - it makes a certain amount of sense - but still is a weird thing to do - and isn't really very respectful to the deceased!
