I think malicious is too strong a word. I think they were just being bitchy schoolgirls and grasping at the simplest things that made her different. Like inarticulate people always do. I'd say they were moderately racist but not to extent it was portrayed in the media.
It was all very hysterical and overplayed. Must have been a slow newsweek.
