well i don't know about irish, but North America certainly had plenty of it's own languages, but it's hard to focus on preserving yur language, when the English (and french, spanish, etc) come over and infect you with all their nasty European diseases that wipe out most of yur population.
Funny how preserving a language/culture gets harder when people are gasping their last breath. Especially when we are talking about a people who's history is mostly oral because they are a migratory culture. Carrying a written library around with you while following the buffalo herds is not exactly possible.
The English should be ashamed of the spread of the English language, not proud of it. European colonialism was disgraceful in every way. Worse than anything Hitler accomplished, imo.
We all would be appalled hearing a German speak with pride about the Nazi's, yet it's not uncommon to hear the English speak with pride about "The Empire" (colonialism).
