I think he's looking for the sympathy vote, I have Tonsilitis a lot pretty much once a year if I'm lucky and more if I'm not. I can barely move when I get it and it takes weeks for me to feel 100% again, he might have been ill last week but it wasn't tonsilitis, you can't sing like that with it, I can barely stand and can't talk at all when I've got it. I reckon he might have had a cold and was trying to look for sympathy at best.
