Back in 2004 there were plans to make a Grand Theft Auto: Vice City movie with Eminem as the main character of Tommy Vercetti. Of course, Eminem dropped out and the movie was cancelled. Then 4 years later in 2008 there was another plan to make a Grand Theft Auto movie however this also didn't go to plan and never made it onto the big screen. I would love if they made a GTA Movie, It would be amazing. But the question is, what GTA Game do you think would be brilliant as a movie? Based on the characters, storyline and location. I'm going to just give a quick synopsis of each game, quickly. I hope you all base this on what you think would make a good movie rather than what you liked playing the most! Title: Grand Theft Auto III Released: 2001 Characters: Claude Speed | Catalina | 8 Ball Location: Liberty City ![]() Set: 2001 Story: The player character has robbed the Liberty City Bank with his girlfriend, Catalina, and a male accomplice. While running from the scene, Catalina shoots him and leaves him to die in an alley; the accomplice is also seen lying nearby. The player character survives but has been arrested and subsequently found guilty and sentenced to jail. While he is being transferred, an attack on the police convoy aimed at kidnapping an unrelated prisoner sets him free. Title: Grand Theft Auto Vice City Released: 2002 Characters: Tommy Vercetti | Ricardo Diaz | Lance Vance Location: Vice City ![]() Set: 1986 Story: The player takes on the role of Tommy Vercetti, a man who was released from prison in 1986 after serving 15 years for killing eleven people. An angered Sonny Forelli arrives in Vice City with a small army of mafioso and street thugs, a massive shoot out takes place in Tommy's new mansion until he finally kills Sonny and Lance Vance, who betrayed Tommy at a later stage of the game. Title: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas Released: 2004 Characters: Carl Johnson | Grove Street | Officer Tempenny Location: Los Santos | The Badlands | San Fierro | Las Venturas ![]() ![]() ![]() Set: 1992 Story: After living in Liberty City for 5 Years, It was time to go home. Carl arrives back in San Andreas only to find that his mother has been murdered and his families are falling apart. In an immense tail of loyalty and betrayal, CJ finds himself on a journey throughout San Andreas to find and take down his mom's murder and bring Grove Street back together. Title: Grand Theft Auto IV Released: 2008 Characters: Niko Bellic | Dimitri Rascalov | Roman Bellic Location: Liberty City ![]() Set: 2008 Story: Niko Bellic is fresh of the boat and comes to Liberty City to live the American Dream, but things don't get off to a good start when he's thrown into feuds with Loan Sharks and Drug Wars. Alot like San Andreas this story sees alot of betrayal by people you thought were your friends, although Niko does manage to make some friends along the way. Niko's main priority is to find and kill a man that once betrayed him and his friends years back. The story has two possible endings decided on by the player. So which do you think deserves to be a movie? My favourite game is probably Vice City and GTA IV. I would love Vice City to be a movie but it's more to do with the location and stuff and there is other movies set in Miami in the 80's anyway. GTA IV's storyline is bollocks, there's no depth and at times it felt like I didn't even know what I was playing to achieve where as with San Andreas I always knew what the main goal was. GTA IV is fun to play but would it make a good movie? I'd fall asleep through it. San Andreas is the winner for me, I've always said this game is over rated and it is but the storyline is fantastic and I would love to see the characters and the missions come to life on the big screen, it would just be amazing. I think some day they will make a GTA Movie. I mean they wanted to once the only thing that stopped them was Emenim, I don't know why they picked him to be Tommy anyway ![]() And of course they wanted to do one again in 2008 the only thing that stopped this was Rockstar weren't on board and they didn't have the rights. But you never know, I think one day they will and I hope if they do, they go back to San Andreas. What do you think?

There was never going to be a Vice City movie. That was a half baked rumor that only highly gullible people believed. Ya dig.
No GTA game should be a movie. Ever. They were all influenced by movies anyway. Vice City was based on Scarface. Turn it into a movie and you have a Scarface rip off. The games are great because they work as games. They are games with movie like storylines. But as movies themselves they would be generic action movies that would appeal only to teenage boys and dumb motherfuckers like me who buy Steven Segal boxsets for their ironic value. |

I can picture the trailer for the movie. Slap GaGa's Telephone on their. Two hours driving across bridges, falling up sets of stairs, and tripping over objects on the street.

The problem with video game-to-film adaptations is they usually suck because the viewer doesn't have as much creativity with is as they do the games themselves. Kinda like how people say "The movie wasn't as good as the book."
Super Mario Bros sucked, the Tomb Raider movies weren't great (should've been based on the games IMO) and most recently Tekken also sucked. I'd like a GTA movie to work it's just a case of how it could stay true to the story of the game and remain fun

I really hope they don't do this, i love the GTA series, in fact i would say it's my favourite game of all time, however i feel this would ruin it for me.

LOL does anyone remember this short film to promot GTA2? It's a little dated but in my mind this is how I kinda imagine a GTA3 or 4 movie being albeit obviously with more dialogue
On a side note: I wish Scott Maslen acted more like this in Eastenders. It'd make Jack Branning a bit more interesting lol.

A film shouldn't be made as most of the games are already based upon films already. Vice City & San Andreas got their influences from Scarface and Boyz in the Hood respectively. Although in SA's case they become rapidly different to the source material, it still wouldn't work.

Because it would be a dumb, cheesy action movie. The worst thing you can ever do is assume storys that work well in games would automatically make good movies. GTA's stories when put in a movie context are cheesy as hell and cookie cutter. In fact I think that's part of the idea behind them.
Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid and GTA are all examples of games that have really amazing stories. They would make for absoloutely terrible movies though. |

Jolly good
|
The trouble with all game-to-film adaptions is that games get a lot of their ideas from films in the first place. They get away with using old ideas because they are adding interactivity to the experience. When it comes to making the film of the game these familiar ideas go back to being cliches.
The other problem is that games often don't have great stories, it is up to the player to provide the narrative. But that doesn't do much good for a film. |
