Default People lying about themselves on the net.

After watching catfish last night which was a documentary on more4 about a woman who made up a whole life about herself on facebook to dupe a guy into sex txt etc and after someone on the old c4 forum pretended to be a bloke when they were infact a woman.Even putting on a fake voice whilst on the telephone to the people he/she had befriended on the forum , would you consider doing this?Or infact have you?

No, I wouldn't consider doing this as I don't really see the point.

If they had valid reasons for doing so, then yeah.

I can almost understand young girls maybe pretending to be a bloke because of the amount of online creeps there are, but when it comes to adults talking, I don't really get it

Depends on how different they actually are...

Age - beyond 5 years is iffy
Gender - only really matters if I saw them as more than friends, would be wierd if they seemed really girly/manly but were the opposite though
County - wouldnt bother me

This prog last night was a 41 yr old woman who made up a whole new persona by dowloading various pics from facebook and using them to create a new persona for herself. She started talking to this photographer as she claimed that her 8 yr old daughter paints his photographs(it ended up being her who did the paintings) she then pretended to be her 19 yr old daughter whilst sex txting this photographer and talking on the phone with him..She was unaware he and his friends were documenting it for a film project culmunating in a surprise visit from him..I was surprised that it was a woman doing this btw and surprised at the fact she was so open with allowing her child to talk and meet with what was after all a stranger..

Depends on the situation, lies and purpose of lies as someone else said. I mean I know alot of people just like talking online but don't want to give out any info on themselves, which is fine, but you can do that without "fooling" people too. Like a couple of people on here don't want to give out their names so they make one up (or get online christened........Reggie )

Have to admit, find it wierd that somebody wouldnt want to give their age let alone name.. its nice to know them 2 basic details when talking to somebody.

Edit: oh and gender, but the regulars have given that

Just think, it's almost a certainty that at least one other member that posts regularly on here isn't who they say they are.

If only Stacey was still around to get on the case

I think its fine to lie about your identity if you don't have ulterior motives other than to protect yourself.
Say a Tibb member lied about who they were, as long as it was just under the intention to never be identified and didn't have an intention to ever see anyone on here in real life and all they wanted was a place to vent their feelings and opinions but safely then it would be perfectly acceptable.

However its controversial because of the pedophiles and stuff out there who do the same thing in order to exploit innocent people, thats whats wrong with it and why people cant easily do it safely with out being accused of having motives which others don't approve of even if it is totally innocent because the media only publish the 'horror' stories about it.

yeah, I agree but you can usually tell by the type of new identity a person takes on, what their motives were.

People are free to be who they want on the internet if they don't have any ulterior motives, sure, but I can't help but find it strange. It's natural to assume that people who go to great lenghts to invent a new personality have issues.

I couldn't imagine having the energy to keep it up as lies beget more lies so you'd have to devote a lot of time to it to keep all the plates spinning.

I agree with this, there is a difference between inventing a personality with motive (other than just to make yourself seem more interesting) and wanting to protect your identity. I give out very little information on this forum and never accept friendship requests but I dont ask any fm's for any information about themselves either or request any friendships. I don't think thats weird at all. I havn't watched Catfiish yet but have recorded it so I'll prob watch it later

Sounds like a lot of work and effort though I mean what was she gaining from it?

A temporary escape I think, she seemed very disappointed in how her life turned out.

Probably.

However for someone to go to that lengths i think it would be fair to assume that there was more likely to be a deeper psychological meaning in it for her. Like an escapism from herself or her ability to be a person she had always wanted to be because she had never been accepted in society for herself.
