Milly Dowler’s parents have reacted angrily to reports that former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks is in line to receive a massive £3.5 million payout after resigning.

Mrs Brooks stepped down on Friday, five days after the last News of the World was published.

Mark Lewis, the family solicitor, said: ‘From the Dowlers’ perspective it is astonishing that such large payments could be made to people who were not victims of crime hacking but associated with the perpetrators.’

According to unconfirmed reports, Mrs Brooks is one of several senior executives leaving the company who are in line to receive severance packages worth in excess of £1 million.

News of the World editor Colin Myler could receive up to £2 million. Departed senior lawyers Jon Chapman and Tom Crone are said to be in line for £1.5 million. The payouts will reportedly be conditional on gagging orders.

The sums mentioned have also angered staff at the News of the World, who are still waiting to hear whether they will be made redundant or offered other jobs.

The NOTW didn't kill their daughter. Her financial gain has nothing to do with them.

It was always going to happen, there was probably some legal stuff behind her leaving that meant she needed some money. And the NOTW is part of a large organisation so it's to be expected.

Maybe they're angry because she was in charge of a newspaper that hacked their murdered daughters phone in order to get a juicy story to print in their rag. And Rebecca Brookes denied any knowledge of it. Now, having done the decent thing and resigned, she's getting a multi-million pound windfall. Sound fair?

If she really didn't know what was going on at her own newspaper, she should have been sacked. If she did know it was happening, she should have been sacked. Whichever way you look at it, her being awarded £3.5m is a slap in the face not only to the victims of the phone hacking scandal, but also to the people at NOTW who had nothing to do with the hacking and lost their jobs anyway. How much do we think those people will be getting?

I doubt anyone in any other walk of life would be in line for any pay off especially when under investigation by the Police.
Also in other walks of life,people who resign and leave lose any pay off they would have been entitled to normally.

The Dowlers are naturally angry, Rebekah Brookes is either a good liar or incompetent,either way she should not get this pay off at all but certainly not until,or more to the point 'if' she is totally cleared of any wrongdoing or major blame after the full Police investigation.

However unfair it seems or upsetting it is to the Dowling family or any other victims of this, its really no surprise. Brookes was always going to get an obscene payout if she was forced to resign, you can't reach the level she was at without being in a win, win situation, in terms of her employment contract. Its stupid to think she would have walked away with nothing and her head hung in shame. She's not the only person to act badly and walk away with a wadge of cash she doesn't deserve (look at the bank execs), that's just the way it is. At least she's gone

I don't think it's stupid to hope she would walk away with nothing. Of course people in her position are in a win/win situation but this story is big enough to perhaps bring about a change. It's also good to know the public are making their views and anger on this very strongly to their MPs too.

Well I am not in the least surprised, I knew if she resigned it would be with a very large handshake, otherwise her lawyers would screw them to the wall. If the government are able to bring about much needed changes and anything like this ever happens again, we can hopse that no such financial benefits can be made again, but that's for the future, it won't happen overnight

I think you're labouring under the misapprehension that I was stunned and surprised by the payout. I don't think anyone was surprised, but in the circumstances people are angry, and rightly so.

I understand their anger, especially the families of the victims, the whole thing is disgraceful and I can't even begin to think how Milly's parents feel about her payout. The fact that these executives do so well, whether it be something like this or the banking execs lining their own pockets is appalling, but it seems such an everyday occurance, I no longer have the energy to get angered by it
