Whenever I watch one of those 9/11 programmes that come on each anniversary I think about it. It's a horrible thought really but I think I'd have been a mess and probably have jumped, simply because I'd rather die like that than burned or crushed to death.

I am so incredibly jealous of anyone who got to see it unfold as it happened.

Yeah but it wasn't the same scale as 9/11, still deaths though.

I can't really see anything like this happening again, security on aeroplanes is way too high for terrorists to be able to hijack planes and after 9/11 people are much more aware of suspicious behaviour. Then again it only takes a small group of people to slip under the radar for these things to happen...

I think the reason 9/11 is so significant is because it shattered the USA's sense of invulnerability and changed global relations for ever; 10 years ago it was basically the worlds lone super power, a place of infinite opportunity that was safe from foreign hostility - not the case anymore

Although 3,000 died in the Twin Tower attacks the actual subsequent death toll is in the hundreds of thousands after the disastrous wars in both Iraq and Afghanistan and also from the general "war on terror". Really I think the way America reacted played right into the hands of Al Qaeda and made then out to be a far larger and more dangerous organisation than they actually were.

Sometimes I've thought about the people that jumped, an I thought about having to make the choice between burning to death, or falling 110 stories to the ground. I'm terrified of heights, so I don't know if I could jump, but at the same time burning to death must surely be the most painful way to die.

I still don't know what I'd do.

I think the reason 9/11 has had such an impact is because we literally SAW people dying before our eyes,I know there have been other terrible events, but we actually saw these people obliterated and could do nothing to help we know lots of other people die in wars etc,but we dont see it first hand we are just told, this was different. We saw over 3,000 people die that day.

Weapons can be made of ceramics, wont be spotted on some airport detectors.

Not only knives but also guns.

Regardless of any security measures imposed at any airport with enough time, resources and planning aircraft can and will still be hijacked.

But the cockpits are sealed now, so they can hijack a plane, but they can't use it as a missile anymore. (unless the pilot IS the terrorist)

Not strictly true, cockpit doors are now reinforced and locked, but can still be opened during flights, for meals, crew relief etc.

Very True Shasown

It could happen again
if they take over the Cockpit 5 or 10mins before they want to hit a building.

Not every Plane has the Extra Security, as well.

Can you actually unlock the cockpit doors from the outside though?

I don't think so, and also i think the pilots now have the ability to turn on an intercom to the rest of the plane, and listen to make sure there's nothing out of the ordinary going on before they unlock the door for the food to be delivered.

Actually i was 19, and had just moved to California 3 weeks before, first time away from home on my own.

I don't get the impression that many people on this forum are hardcore religious, i'm certainly not.

but your devotion to conspiracy theories does remind me of a cult or "hardcore religious" people, now that YOU mention it. Believing things with no evidence... yup there is a lot in common between conspiracy theorists an religious fanatics..

yes and watching a couple of poorly-edited YouTube videos based on circumstantial evidence coupled with an inferiority complex has really made you aware of everything, Grimnir. Pull the other one.

Were people actually on the planes that crashed?? You never really hear about them very much :/ I remember hearing that the guy who created Family Guy was suppose to be on one of the planes but decided not to go or something.

Yes, the planes had a lot of passengers on them. All on board every plane died.

We don't hear about them much? you must not have watched any of the dozens of documentaries they've been showing. there were dozens of phone calls recorded from them, and interviews with the family members who received those calls. also calls from the flight attendants to the airlines and control towers. There is ALOT of stuff about the people on the planes.
