Police in North Wales have confirmed that they are investigating the naming on Twitter of footballer Ched Evans' rape victim.

The force says it will deal "robustly" with any criminal offences that have been committed.

Ched Evans was jailed for five years on Friday after being convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room near Rhyl.

Hundreds of messages have been posted on Twitter abusing his victim and calling for the footballer to be freed.

Many have named the woman despite the fact that she is guaranteed under the law to lifetime anonymity.

DCI Steve Williams, of North Wales police, said: "We find this to be profoundly disturbing and are determined to seek out those responsible.

"I would advise people who post such status and tweets to consider the implications of their action and those who add comments to appreciate that they may be condoning such behaviour and contributing to the continued trauma upon this young woman."

Sheffield United Football Club has launched its own investigation, which focuses on comments made by their reserve team player Connor Brown.


Brown, 19, sparked fury by posting a series of insults about the victim on the social networking site.

They have since been taken down.

Rape support centres and victim support organisations for victims of sexual abuse have condemned the online abuse.

Holly Dustin of End Violence Against Women said she was deeply disturbed that someone who had gone through the trauma of giving evidence in a trial and had been promised anonymity should be exposed in social media.

She said: "She has also received really nasty and vile abuse and we are urging to the Home Secretary to review the protection of anonymity as well as the harassment many women experience online.

"We want to see football clubs and the Football Association take a strong stance against sexism in the sport.

"We also want the Government to take concerted action to address attitudes that condone violence."

The more I look into the story the more I think she is a gasser. I'll give her the benefit of the doubt though.

NOBODY should be naming names irrespective of who they "support". Ched Evans has been found guilty, and unless a time comes where the victim has been proved to be lying then people should respect her right to anonymity. No matter what anyone thinks of the verdict, that is the decision at this time. I don't know why some people think they have the right to post her identity when this could directly affect her in many ways.

I'm not convinced he was guilty tbh, just can't see how when 2 guys sleep with the same girl in the same room on the same night one can be a rapist and the other not, especially when the girl says she can't remember anything so how can they know what she consented to and what she didn't?

Although yeah, she should still keep her anonymity

Three people have been arrested as part of a police investigation into the naming of footballer Ched Evans' rape victim on a social media site.

North Wales Police confirmed that two men have been arrested under Section 5 of the Sexual Offences Amendments Act and another male on suspicion of malicious communication.

All three men are being detained by South Yorkshire Police at Sheffield police station where they are being interviewed by officers from North Wales.

Detective Chief Inspector Steve Williams said: "These arrests were made with the assistance of South Yorkshire Police and are part of a series of planned arrests we will be making during this ongoing investigation."

Evans was jailed for five years on April 20 after being convicted of raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room near Rhyl.

Following sentencing of the Sheffield United player, messages were posted on Twitter about his victim.

If anything the other guy sounds more at fault(from what I've read), he was the one who picked her up......purely because she was in such a drunken state and took advantage of that it seems, also he was the one who rang Ched and told him to come over iirc

If a woman is too drunk than in the eyes of the law she can't give consent.
There's always much more to the story but we have to accept the Judges decision
obviously the footballer didn't do enough to clear himself

The only reason people are debating that she could be lying is because it's a Footballer that's been locked up, unless the evidence says otherwise then his guilty imo.
