Hi Niamh. If you read back through the thread, that's not what I'm saying at all. Be 'Niamh' the poster. Also be a mod. No problem. But everyone knowing you're a mod changes the tone of their interaction with you and around you. When you post as a mod, use a generic forum sig. Then you get to do your job and you also get to post when and what you want.

I appreciate that, but opinions are something that will never please everyone (as we're witnessing right now since I'm replying to this haha) and I think that a mod should still be able to express their views as long as they are of course sticking to the rules of the forum.

I think for the most part the forum works very well with moderators and members sort of being on a similar level. It may look strange and of course I'm not speaking on behalf of the mods but I do think it's nice that the mods can give their thoughts as well as have to do the job of helping people and cleaning the forum. It's only the occasional vendetta and it really isn't that often. If a mod was abusing their power that much, they would have those rights taken away from them. I'm fairly certain of that.

Well, that's not up to us, that's up to admin, there's not a whole lot we can do about that

She was a diamond. Smart, witty and unreverentially passionate. However, and this is the important part - the craic on the discussion boards was only ever that for Mids; she never judged someone by their opinions. She could disagree fundamentally with you and she was like a dog with a bone. But she had a heart of gold and she'd do anything for you.

I'm simply answering the question that was posed in the OP - as someone who joined in 2010.

Again, I'm simply entering the discusssion. It's a fairly academic point now, as the mods are known and identified and you can't reverse the flow. It's just a point in a discussion.

So basically what you're suggesting is that every Moderator action should be done anonymously, which'd just make the Mods less accountable?

Well, Infractions are given from an anonymous staff account but everyone knows who the mods are, that's not our choice, it's just the way it's always been. tbh most people on the forum don't have a problem with it, I think most people here can still have a laugh with us as easy as they would with any other member but like I said, that's the way it is, it's not our choice but we all seem to manage just fine

The site needs to be accountable - with proper appeal and review systems in place; not individual mods. Large sites have dozens, probably hundreds, of moderators. The lines are too blurred on here. My opinion.

I'm tempted to ask who 'we all' is - as the question in the OP was about trying to maintain NEW members. In any event, I will agree to disagree with the system - not with you; as you say, that's the way the site is set up.

You've hardly even posted here in the 2/3 years you've been a member, how could you possibly know that? We obviously are no where near as busy enough a site to have "hundreds" of mods, I don't know what exactly you're suggesting?

Well there is an appeals sub forum here which members can use privately where their posts are only seen by the Mods and Admin. True large sites do have a lot more Mods and maybe they do have a more efficient system, but it's not necessarily feasible on here given how this forum is quite small and tighter knit comparatively

Why so defensive Niamh? I'm busy. I came back when I heard that my good friend Mids had died and posted on her tribute thread - then, having renewed my password, I continued to post. I'm suggesting, quite clearly, that moderators - be they posters or not - should post anonymously and professionally as moderators.

Perhaps these posts should be moved to the R.I.P thread. Not really much to do with the topic of the thread...

Thanks for not jumping down my throat. I still think, hypothetically, it would be possible on a smaller site. I don't think it would work on here now, obviously, as that boat has sailed and the mods are identified - as I said earlier.

Anyway, I hope that in the morning this conversation will answer a few questions for the OP about what sometimes convinces posters to keep posting - or to not keep posting - on TIBBS.

Why so defensive? Because I'm a moderator and a regular member of this site.

One may ask why a person who very rarely posts would have so much criticisms of a site they barely ever post on?

Yeah, this. Over on DS it's as if the moderators are a bunch of robots and whenever a thread gets heated they copy and paste "this thread has been closed at it is no longer at an acceptable standard of discussion" LOL.

That and you could insult literally anyone on there (an autistic girl was targeted and bullied by trolls) and get off scot-free, yet you could get a week ban for rolling your eyes at someone.

It's just terribly moderated and idiotic.

Why did this become a mod bashing thread? I personally think we do a great job on here, and we help everyone out the best we can, including going out of our way to get you festive names, running games and to get the forum involved in events like designing new skins etc.

There will always be a clash every so often between mods and members, that happens on every forum, but we are very fair, even if your personal opinion feels differently. The way mods and admin have run this site has worked over the years and most of you have stayed on the site.
