These 'counter-protests' that the UAF carry out always seem a bit pointless to me, don't really have much impact but to lead to violence and arrests, when in reality very few people would care/notice the BNP doing their march otherwise

But they do have an impact, they make it clear that there are those in the UK who are against a fascist movement mobilising and spreading their hate.
As much as there are those who spread messages of prejudice and ignorance, there are those who are equally as passionate to spread the message of tolerance.

They should organise themselves better, maybe wear a kinda uniform and perhaps get a symbol of some sort to rally their anti-fascist followers.

''Police said 31 people were arrested after members of Unite against Fascism refused to move to let the BNP march to the Cenotaph in Whitehall.''
This shows that the majority of them were arrested for obstruction not violence, I have never and would never condone violence but I can't help but feel it's slightly more acceptable when it conveys a strong positive message of strength against those seeking to oppress others.... The suffragettes have been in the news a lot recently, what would have happened if they had not acted in such a dramatic and passionate fashion?

I wouldn't dismiss the efforts of these women offhand as it discredits their memory and what they fought to achieve for women in the future. I have heard this said before and I find this attitude very sad, there is truth of course that the war enabled women to prove they are competent in many fields. However the sacrifices those who instigated the movement years before had their part to play too....I cannot accept that the tireless efforts, campaigns and protests are consigned to history as nothing more than a series of unfortunate events?

Groups like these only further promote groups like the BNP, just gets them more publicity and gives the BNP an excuse for why their protests turn into chaos

I don't think that is a very sad attitude at all, I find it more sad that the campaign for female votes is now often equated with the suffragettes violence and Emily Davison chucking herself under a horse, while the role of the moderates and the peaceful activists is often forgotten Last edited by MTVN; 01-06-2013 at 11:45 PM. |

The moderate protester won't be forgotten, it is just the more extreme the act the more it is used as a focal point I guess, or manipulated by the media or politicians for their own ends..
You can say that about any cause that people protesting about, some have invariably resorted to all kinds of tactics to show they are dedicated or to highlight the injustice they or others are experiencing, hunger strikes....sit ins... treetop protests, anything to make the public take notice and hopefully back them to bring about a hopefully peaceful resolution. 'fight for what's right' 'fight the good fight' 'fight for what you believe in' these are all slogans that were commonplace and advocated not too long ago... Now the only message seems to be ' put up and shut up'
