Not really, but I do know I'm in the minority here. If it was a celebrity that had touched my life and had a real impact for one reason or another - let's say a football manager, then I could understand that because of that connection, but when it comes to just generic RIP threads for famous/semi-famous people, then I don't get it.

As an example, my grandma died last year. We all loved her and even though she had dementia and didn't really know us that well in the last years of her life, she always had a presence. I miss that presence, but when we get together as a family, we all use the slit across the neck hand sign when we talk about her. It doesn't mean anything negative, it's just a way of making light of the situation, I suppose. Death has never held any reverence for me/my family, and people I dislike or have no interest in before they die, don't suddenly deserve anything different. I suppose that sounds weird to people who haven't had my upbringing.

I just don't contribute in those threads, I don't make a point of going in them and telling people they're wrong, but it's just not something I'll ever understand.

Princess Diana syndrome, where as a country we become professional mourners over every famous person that dies. I'm not trying to start an argument with anyone about the rights and wrongs, I'm just trying to explain to people how I see death.

People love breaking news, they "love" a celeb early death or a disaster as its somehow life affirming and it brings people together and in some weird way you get kudos for being an early informer

I bet people were falling over themselves the other day tweeting about Geldoff to be the first with the news..

I found Heath Ledger really sad and Stephen Gately too because it hit so close to home. All I keep thinking with Peaches' death is her poor babies.

Peaches, Paul Walker, MJ and Whitney all got to me.
They were all kind of out of the blue.

Whitney had had her problems but was on the mend and I was happy for her.
MJ had his concert and I always have/will love his music. I think he was severely misunderstood in life.
Peaches was really shocking and sad because although she had been wild I really think she was a well rounded and settled mother.
Paul Walker because he seemed like such a genuinely nice person and was again out of the blue.

I felt sorry for Amy with her whole downward spiral and it was horrible to watch. But I wasn't surprised or that saddened by her death.

Oh special mention for Brittany Murphy too. Still very suspicious circumstances around that one and she seemed lovely.
Was upset for ages about Heath too. Made a point of watching all his films.

Lisa Lopes' death saddened me because it was a car crash and there's video footage of it happening, she was the only one to die. She was still a young woman, very talented and I enjoyed the music of TLC growing up and I still do now, it's sad that her life was cut short. In spite of her problems she was a very spiritual, kind person who did a lot to help others so it's sad that she's no longer with us.

Amy & MJ I cried over.

I felt pretty awful over Philip Seymour Hoffman too. And of the deaths that weren't unexpected in my lifetime, probably Etta, James Brown & George Harrison.

It's more sad if they haven't attained a great age, if it's a very aged celebrity who's had a full life then it's more a nostalgic RIP.

Princess Diana's death saddened me greatly, she'd never attained the happiness she wanted and deserved, a terrible waste, and for someone who gave south joy and pleasure to others.

Whitney felt like a terrible loss as well, for her sheer talent and still so much potentially to come.

Probably Stephen Gately and Paul Walker...

Dont really see how Amy Winehouse was a shock tbh, given her lifestyle :/

Its sad whoever dies . even celebs who died before we were born i find sad. they usually die at their peak or during a comeback highpoint.
most its such a waste of life. i dont think your human if you dont feel something.

The argument of you shouldn't feel sad. well thats a great argument. what it does is hold a mirror up to our own mortality and the people we lost. and will lose
