Mainstream meaning bland/uninspired/repetitive/similar music all getting the high sales and the major popularity.

Most stuff of substance doesn't get into mainstream because they don't appeal to the masses.

Before Cowell you had Aqua/Spice Girls/N Sync etc etc it's always been that way.
