Helen is 9 years older than Ashleigh. She's lived as an adult for a much longer time. Do you expect an 18 year old to be as mature as a 48 year old because they're both ADULTS? Do you really think it's irrelevant?

Yes it is relevant. Age was relevant to Pauline behaving the way she did. It made her behaviour all the worse because she was in a position of authority because of it.
