Actually I'm pretty sure Nick was up for taking part in both of the proposed seven way leaders debates but is only not doing this one since the BBC don't want to be seen as empty chairing Cameron. The broadcasters pathetically pandered to his demands, hence why these debates aren't nearly as exciting as they should be

Its the losers show, no good can come from debating the same old crap over and over with people who are not going to win the election. The more Ed associates with that group, the less he looks like a future leader.

As for Nick, no way he is missing the debate to make Cameron look better, that's just silly. He will have been told that it wont benefit the lib dems election prospects - simple as that
