It's like how Helen was a prostitute, last summer. That's often used as a derogatory term. But calling Helen one, isn't because she was one.

Well it's not really, the word Prostitute is actually the proper term for that particular profession, calling her a ***** would have been fifty times worse, don't you think? and the reason for that is it's a slang, derogatory word.
For me there's a massive difference between saying someone is promiscuous and saying someone is a slut. Slut implies someone is nasty and unclean as well
