If I voluntarily spend a lot of time with someone, I'm friends with them.

Yeah kind of for me too. I never make the 'first move' with people, so people always end up coming up to me to chat. I don't make friends easily, partly because I have zero desire for social contact and also because I can't read people's actions very well, but some of the people who talk to me end up being people I like. When they've made an effort to get to know me and be friends with me, I start loosening up a bit and making an effort back. I'm doing a Tafe course right now (kind of like Australia's version of community college) and for me, my friendship group kind of started when I voluntarily sat next to someone who had been speaking to me in class. That was kind of the moment when all of us were like 'oh we're friends now' (we're all fairly socially awkward).

..I guess, when you don't have to share jokes and you don't have to make conversation, you can just be together and say nothing at all or you can not be with them/see them for ages and you still know they're one of your closest friends because they know you and know quiet times, chatty times, fun times etc..they just know, understand and don't judge you for your flaws but like you despite them...

Ooh this is good too! Sometimes just being in their company is good enough, no need for conversation!

Three little words are very important to bear in mind during your 'friend-gathering' years;

"Et Tu, Brute?"

And then they wonder to each other why they are speaking French

They are dazed and confused
