Yes, if he knew they were coming back he should have stayed where he was but obviously when they drove off, he thought they really had left so he left too. I also suspect they left him for quite a bit longer than they claim to have left him before going back, not just a few minutes. If it was minutes he'd still have been able to hear them shouting for him.

He might be quite strong willed, and just didn't respond, and turned it round on them to teach them a lesson, he seems quite resourceful most kids would be rooted to the spot, I'm glad he gave them a torrid time
