Have had a few family members who are crippled with Dystonia and it's a common slander term to call someone a cripple. Had a fair amount of very ugly people call my mother a cripple and walk behind her mimic-ing her poor mobility. Have seen some of the ugliest of human nature.
Though, I don't get upset when someone says someone is crippling a situation, or the economy is crippled or this feeling is crippling. It's just a metaphor, a creative use of language, an emotive way to communicate new meanings. Metaphors don't necessarily disparage the victims and the causes surrounding those victims. #savetheenglishlanguage
