I think it started in Amazon here about 4 years ago, that's the first time I became aware if it, I remember because I bough a kindle the following year we had Black Friday in the shops where there were physical fights over TVs, last year to combat the fist fights they extended it to Black Friday weekend, and this year it's been a whole week.
