I think the award leads people into thinking that the person of the year has made a positive influence/contribution.. If the criteria was clearer -a huge influence- then I think people would complain less. Apart from Donald, he's probably unaware of the description of the award too.

The winner of the presidential election is always Time's Person of the Year.

It would've been pretty ridiculous not to give it to him tbh. It's not an award for the best person just the most influential.
