My point being that to go from that straight to "She's just trying to make him feel better" without actually hearing that part is absolute arrogance on his part.
Also it's hardly negative. We all have our own personal preferences, to take it as an insult to not be someone's first choice is ridiculously self absorbed. And to turn it into an attack on his character even more so.
