I think Sam is bored and is just grateful for a bit of flirting to stay alive

I agree. Ellie is a mess when it comes to men. I think she creates a drama where there isn't one, and imagines Sam is flirting when he is probably just getting on with Isabelle. She seems to get paranoid every time his attention is not on her. She needs to get over herself.
