Anything with food contamination can't be recycled... they can clean plastic, glass, etc, to a degree but things like paper, it's too contaminated to be reused. It depends too on whoever does the recycling and the machinery they have obviously, whether it is something they accept.

Since when did garbage disposal become a full-time ****ing job?
By the time I've sorted it I'm so late for work the place has ****ing closed. |

I think most of the recycling is a con (i am very good myself) but i do think half the stuff i put out never gets recycled - do we ever find out , in my area we actually need a recycling truck going behind the 'recycling truck' to collect all the plastic bottles left in the road ! Nevermind they throw the black boxes everywhere, it really is dreadful.

Yeah, sometimes I think some of the stuff doesn't get recycled, just "disposed" into different areas so us sorting through saves them the job.

The only time we had to sort our recyclables is when I have to take it in directly after Hurricane Harvey hit and pickup stopped for like a month or two... that was a real pain, because a lot of what I get, I recycle... but I do question how much actually gets through the process... still better than sending it all to the landfill though. If it's machine-based, I always wondered if the employees just threw away what they thought might be an issue in the machine... like they won't take plastic bags, because supposedly they get stuck in the sorter. So I just take in to the grocery store. Last edited by Maru; 03-05-2018 at 09:13 PM. |

tbqfh I throw all sorts into the recycling bin whether it has food on it or not; our green waste bins are only collected once every three weeks and it's overflowing by then already. So the blue bin will continue to have "contaminated boxes" in it, I'm afraid.

We have green, blue, blue box, brown and grey
Blue (every 2 weeks)- cardboard, plastic and metal (cans / tins) Blue box (weekly) - Glass and "small electrical goods" (kettles, toasters... though I once stuck a Henry Hoover in it ![]() Brown (random like every 4/5 weeks and not over winter) - Garden waste Grey (weekly) - food waste Green (every 3 weeks) - all other landfill crap It's a ****ing military operation and means you need like 3 separate bins in the kitchen ![]() |

Bloody hell we have different recycling containers but they all get collected together.
Then general waste and garden waste on a separate collection. |

![]() ![]() ![]() We get trash pickup every week and recycle is picked up every two weeks. They're both 96 gallon containers. It's unique to the city though. The pickup was similar in other places we've lived. My grandmother is outside the city limits a third party company and they allow mixed recycle (including glass). My recycle is usually at or a little bit overfull by the end of two weeks (a significant portion are Amazon delivery boxes) and we don't really tax the trash all that much. But it's just me and the husband and pets, and we try not to waste food. If it's heavy trash (like used furniture, dead TVs, large scrap, etc), we take it in directly or we have to time removal every two months... heavy trash alterantves between tree waste and junk waste... I take everything that works to Good Will or put in clothing box if it's clothes, etc... and I take used electronics to a computer recycling outfit if it still works or recycle computer parts for other people's machines when they ask me to fix them... There is no sense in taking dead electronics to their specific facility. I read here, they sit in a warehouse or just remain in a facility indefinitely... kind of like our used nuclear rods ![]() |

![]() Rats etc. aren't much of an issue here but if the lid is open even a bit then the foxes will get in. We usually end up just taking excess bags to the dump ourselves. Or I take them to work and sneak them in the massive ones out the back that belong to the chinese take away next door ![]() |
