Depending on which 'side' a person is on: that's one of those very loaded questions Rob.

Some will say - absolutely no point other than to antagonise.

some will say there is a very purposeful meaning and that it is a celebration, anniversary / recognition etc.

In my mind: any true celebration does not exclude anyone - which these type of Walks do...

I love when it happens. He never breaks cloud but like once a week you get a fifteen minute torrential downpour blitz of non content before he eases off and things settle back to a mild breeze.

I've often wondered about the rationale behind wanting to belong to the Orange Order. If you have to flaunt a perceived superiority over your fellow citizens then, to my mind, you must be suffering from an almost crippling inferiority complex. I can see no other rational explanation for it. There's a desperation about having to belong to something, even if, or especially if, that something promotes hatred. If you can only takecomfort from finding something negative in 'the other' you are worthy only of pity.

Without wanting to get too involved in this discussion as someone that has seen first hand the extremes of both sides of this unrest i have to suggest that staging a parade has to be seen as a far more civilised and intelligent way of stating your beliefs than (90% students) trying to bomb, shoot, petrol bomb, intimidate and riot your standpoint into being accepted.

A wise man once said "An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

The problem is bobnot: they don't just parade. They antagonise, they provoke. The atmosphere is one charged with aggression. Looking back on what PatsyLimerick posted and that all stands true. They are staging a parade based on their perceived superirority over others.

These bands march, knowing that many followers are there with no other reason that to vocally and physically 'get it right up' others and they are allowed to do that very publically - with no connection to the Orangemen / Orange order - yet still knowing this: these marches (not some nice fluffy community binding parade) are allowed to continue. And I mean in respect of 'both sides of the fence'

Both sides of what 'unrest'? Why do you need to parade to state your beliefs? Come to that, why do you have to 'state' your beliefs at all? If you are a Protestant, it's simply a matter of which particular brand of Christianity you subscribe to. And there's no brand of Christianity that I'm familiar with that urges you to get out there, stick your metaphorical tongue out and chant 'na, na, nana, na; I'm better than you.........'

If some people find the protestant irish antagonistic then before they can tackle it they need to get their own image of intimidation and violence under check before they can hold that up as a valid argument.
This is my last post on this matter as i have no wish to get into an argument over this matter on here as there is no happy medium.

Protestant irish celebrating who they are.

V the republican equivalent. (st patricks day celebration)

What an absolutely, breathtakingly ridiculous post! First off - the thread refers to SCOTTISH Protestants. Secondly, what exactly are you suggesting with the bit in bold? I'm going to come on the thread and call you a violent terrorist and then just piss off because I cannot back up my stupid point?

Well actually the OP never said it refers to Scottish Protestants i got the impression she was referring to Orange Walks in all parts of Britain

....... bit strange making a thread that refers only to Scottish Protestants and titling it " Orange Walks " when they actually happen in N.Ireland, Wales and England as well.

Which do you think, honestly, lead to more violent conflict? St Patrick's Day Parades or Orange Order 'walks'?
